About the stud

Cattle shaped by practical conditions

Up George Bonsmaras is based on a long-term commitment to breeding uniform, functional cattle capable of performing across extensive conditions. The programme places economic traits and visual appraisal side by side, with particular attention to fertility, milk, growth, conformation and temperament.

Selection is carried out in the environment where the herd must work. Young stock are exposed to veld, changing seasons and challenging terrain so that only practical, adaptable animals move forward in the breeding programme.

Our history

From Kenriet to Up George

The herd developed through a combination of proven female foundations, carefully chosen sires and strict selection under the environmental conditions of northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Origins

A small Bonsmara herd

Lawrence and Derek Ralfe acquired a small Bonsmara herd from Rob Taylor in the Underberg district, creating the early foundation of the stud.

Kenriet

The first stud identity

The enterprise initially operated as the Kenriet Bonsmara stud in the Kokstad district before the move to the Elandslaagte area.

1988

Up George Farm

After Up George Farm was purchased from the former Rumevite operation, the cattle moved to the farm and the stud became known as Up George Bonsmaras.

Growth

A stronger genetic base

Adapted Rumevite females were upgraded through the Bonsmara system, while Arcadia genetics and influential herd sires helped shape the developing herd.

The foundation females were selected for qualities such as fertility, milk, capacity and practical productivity. Over time, strict performance and visual selection created a herd suited to demanding extensive conditions.

Bonsmara cattle were developed for efficient beef production in South African conditions. The breed combines adaptability and maternal ability with growth, fertility and carcass quality.

Breeding programme

A disciplined selection pathway

Every stage of the programme is designed to identify cattle that can perform, reproduce and remain functionally correct under commercial conditions.

Stage 01

Foundation females

Females are assessed for fertility, maternal ability, structural quality, constitution and their ability to remain productive in the herd.

Stage 02

Performance testing

Selected young bulls are measured and evaluated for growth, balance, efficiency and practical performance before final visual selection.

Stage 03

Veld preparation

Promising bulls are exposed to natural veld and demanding terrain to develop soundness, durability and adaptability before sale preparation.
